Possibly, Why People Do Not Watch Your Videos.
I ran a social experiment on what make a video do really well if you do not have a ton of subscribers. How do you get the most organic traffic out of what you are creating? First always remember that not every material you create will bring a lot of attention. That is why we create regularly and often. Try new messages.
I have had a large increase of clients coming to me recently and asking to evaluate their video content to see why they are not getting views. They are usually rather anxious thinking that it must be the video quality that is the problem. (I wanted to prove that it is better to have a good message, than to have high quality on Social Media.) They also are worried that they may not be posting it at the right time of the day, morning vs. evening. (This can play a role, but these skills can be applied once you have a large subscriber-base.) For the most part relevance is more important than timing. Finally, I get the client that shows me an educational video online that has thousands of views and then they show me their better version of that same content and ask why theirs isn’t being seen. Upon a basic search of that topic, I find over 1-million search results and over 100,000 relevant videos with that same educational subject. The video is not a bad video to create if you need it for on your website to explain something, but the relevance of that topic on social media may be less than interesting at the time. However, if a major event happens that influences or comes in contact with the subject matter, now you have something to talk about that is relevant and new material.
Gain More Attention on Your Videos?
- Social Media doesn’t always have to be high quality
- Length, long enough to cover the details and short enough to be attractive
- How does the world interact with your brand vs. what is your brand?
- How many other videos already exist like yours?
- Is it easy to access the information you are sharing elsewhere?
- Start neutral conversations around your brand
- Frequency and repetition can make a difference
- Don’t over think it or try to make it perfect
The Social Experiment: Ugly and on Purpose
In an effort to prove my point, I took a recent major event and paired it with a movement group, and generated a video based on a request for conversation. I wrote a blog about it on a spare website I owned and created a very low-quality video on YouTube to draw attention to the subject. The video was longer than 2 minutes, I know, my clients are always paranoid that their videos are too long. It is ok to ramble on Social Media and YouTube. You will see in my stats that I retain over 30% of my audience even with this poor quality, and those interested in the subject hold onto the view nearly to the absolute end. It is very stable.
The results were as I expected, great. I posted the video and immediately with the right title, keywording, and metadata Google picked it up and through it to the top of search results and it started gaining a ton of steam. Organically, it spiked in views and in one day it had over 1,000 watch minutes and by day two it doubled that with little signs of slowing. I did not promote the post. I did not advertise. I did not even share this video on social media of any kind. This was 100% naturally displayed on YouTube.
Conclusion
I hope this helps remove the content constipation for you. Just get out there and be a reporter, start conversations around your business. As certain topics gain attention, recycle them, improve the quality, add infographics.
